An Ironies Twist

by Mary Jo Bowling

Ironies, a Bay Area furniture and accessory design power house, is (literally) lightening up with a host of new finishes that are sparkling, pale or cerused. Today at Design San Francisco 2010, Ironies co-founder Kate McIntyre showcased the company’s latest offerings in the Kneedler | Fauchere showroom. On display is the dramatic Apollo Mirror, a circular piece with a sunburst of brass and silver colored “spearheads” forming a jagged ring around it. Also on the floor is the Skiff Lounge Chair, a midcentury-inspired item shown in White Oak, a new bleached-wood color. White Teak, a similar but slightly darker finish, is evident on the Seychelles Dining Table, a piece where clean, angular lines and traditional curves exist in harmony. The ceruse Fog finish can be seen on the D’Artagnan Side Table (named for the hot-headed protagonist in the Three Musketeers). The light, milky patina gives the dark Moorish table a rich, complex look. “The lighter finishes are in response to designers, who are finding creative ways to use them in interiors,” says Sean McIntyre of Ironies. “They give our furniture greater breadth.”

The company, long known for an eclectic use of materials, has kicked the practice up a notch. For example, a bedside table from the Strider collection uses brass-colored pulls and wood covered in parchment-hued goat skin. The resulting look is furniture that can be used in any number of settings—from edgy modern to traditional with a contemporary bent.
