Children’s Bureau Family Center in Los Angeles
Project: Children’s Bureau Family Center at Magnolia Place
Location: Los Angeles
Organization: Children’s Bureau of Southern California, a nonprofit leader in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect for more than 100 years.
Population Served: The new Family Center provides children and their families with a preschool, playground, meeting space and family counseling and activity rooms. The facility also houses administrative and support areas, as well as a commercial tenant wing, offering a medical clinic, legal services, and financial counseling for families in need.
Architect: Rios Clementi Hale Studios
Design highlights: The industrial feel of the former 60,000-square-foot credit card manufacturing facility was softened with the use of different varieties of wood, custom-designed wallpaper, creative paint colors and bold graphics. A central “cloud chamber”—a trapezoidal lightbox sporting custom cloud and sky prints that drops down into the central space—ushers natural light into the interior through a series of skylights. Diamond saw-cut patterns in the façades of the building allowed the architects to punch out small windows to bring additional light inside. The preschool’s eight classrooms were organized along the building’s western side and open onto an adjacent courtyard and spacious playground area.

The activity centers feature playful details such as trees that seem to sprout from the tables.
The "cloud chamber" was a creative way to bring natural light into the large space.
Custom wallpaper brings a hint a nature into the administrative offices.
A sprawling outdoor area features a playground and a 275-square-foot restroom facility (below).

Before you help any organization, it is important to find out what are their goals, what services they provide and what volunteers and advocates do. This will help you narrow down your choices. Helping hand is better than praying lips. Thanks!

The minds of teens can be
The minds of teens can be very fragile and if they are not given proper attention it could have bad results for them. For the parents of a troubled child its a very tough thing to be faced with. Residential treatment offers a safe environment where such teens can be given counseling to help them recover from the problems they face.

Made possible by the
Made possible by the generosity of more than 500 individual, foundation and corporate supporters, Magnolia Place Family Center will serve as a community hub for at-risk families and provide comprehensive programs and services in four areas which experts agree are key to strengthening families: nurturing parenting, economic stability, good health and school readiness. Children's Bureau and our in-house community partners (St. John's Well Child and Family Center, County of Los Angeles/LA County Helps, Public Counsel, Eviction Defense Network and PACE), offer families: access to quality medical and dental care; a comprehensive child development center; classes on parenting, child care, and family economics; mental health services; legal assistance; foster care and adoption; and Los Angeles County services. We are also a gathering place for the community to meet, share and socialize with their families and neighbors.
